At the edge of the tree line, about a hundred metres to the east of the shuttle, Observer of Small Details watched as the Sky Messenger flapped its great wings and rose into the air.

He put his shoulders back and raised himself to his full height, then he breathed in the warm air and focused on the two visitors left standing on their craft.

It had fascinated him to see that one visitor; the most open of the older ones, had dropped his crude weapon and made what was probably a sign of peace to the Messenger. Of course, it had responded in kind. It was possible that this visitor had guessed that the Messenger was there to keep them safe. All of this confirmed in Observer’s mind that this particular visitor was the best candidate to give an account for all of them.

He’d been pleased to see something that actually made sense to him. Almost everything these visitors from the stars had done so far had confused him. He assumed they must have some cleverness about them, to come here from so far away, but their behaviour had been reckless to the point of sheer folly. First, their craft hadn’t landed in a simple and graceful manner, like a bird on a branch. Rather, it had slammed into the lip of the valley, scarring the earth.

Not only that, but they’d landed near the spot where the Companions of the Hunt ran out from the cover of the forest to attack the Ground Leapers as they had done so today.

The visitors could not have picked a worse place to land their ship. Perhaps they’d had no choice about where they came down, and it was likely that they were ignorant of what they had done, but it was no wonder that three of the Companions had attacked them. When he’d seen where they had landed their craft, he had petitioned the Sky Messengers to stay in the area and keep watch on what happened. The attack had caused no casualties amongst the visitors, but next time they might not be so fortunate.

There were many unanswered questions in Observer’s mind, but the most fundamental question of all was this: which of the twin moons inspired their intentions – Aletheia of the Light or the dark sibling, Haserak the Veiled?

The twins were invisible now in the light of day, but they would still be up there, circling the planet, locked in their timeless dance of contention. Aletheia, who sought fellowship and truth, was engaged in a great combat with a jealous and greedy sibling. This was Haserak, the veiled one, the one who deceives and contends with their opposite in an ancient struggle which, the calculations showed, would one day resolve itself with Haserak being cast out into the void.

If the Siblings taught Observer anything, it was that the balance between them was, in fact, an illusion. There was a struggle as there always is in life, but it was not eternal – at the end of the long age, there would be a final victory.
